Basic vs. Master Esthetician: Which Program is Right for You?

basic vs master esthetician

If you are considering a career in the rapidly growing skincare and beauty industry, you have likely come across two main paths: becoming a Basic Esthetician or a Master Esthetician. If you are wondering: What is the difference between a basic vs. master esthetician? and Which program should I choose?, this complete guide breaks down both paths to help you choose the best route for your career goals.

In Virginia, these are two distinct professional licenses issued by the DPOR (Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation) with different training requirements, scopes of practice, and career paths.

🚨 UPCOMING CLASS ALERT:
Our next Monday & Wednesday (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM) cohort starts September 21st for both Professional and Master Esthetician programs!

What is a Basic Esthetician?

A basic (or professional) esthetician focuses on the health, wellness, and beautification of the outermost layers of the skin.

In Virginia, you must complete a 600-hour state-approved training program covering sanitation, skin analysis, product chemistry, facial massage, and hands-on aesthetics.

Scope of Practice (What You Can Do):

  • Facials & Deep Cleansing: Customized skin treatments, extractions, exfoliation, and relaxing facial massage.
  • Hair Removal: Professional body waxing, brow shaping, and tweezing.
  • Lash & Brow Artistry: Eyelash extensions, lash lifts, and eyebrow tinting.
  • Makeup Application: Bridal, special event, and corrective makeup artistry.
  • Home Skincare Recommendations: Analyzing skin types to prescribe personalized regimens.

Where You Can Work:

  • Day spas, resort spas, and beauty salons.
  • Dedicated lash bars and brow boutiques.
  • Freelance makeup artistry or opening your own independent salon suite.

What is a Master Esthetician?

A Master Esthetician holds advanced, clinical-level training designed to address deeper skin concerns such as acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, deep wrinkles, and medical pre- and post-operative care.

In Virginia, you must first complete your basic training (or hold an active esthetician license) and then complete an additional 600 hours of specialized clinical training — totaling 1,200 hours.

Scope of Practice (What You Can Do):

  • Advanced Chemical Exfoliation: Performing medium and deep-depth chemical peels (such as TCA, Glycolic, and Salicylic acids).
  • Microdermabrasion & Dermaplaning: Clinical exfoliation techniques to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair.
  • Advanced Modalities: Microcurrent, LED light therapy, ultrasonic treatments, and lymphatic drainage.
  • Medical Collaboration: Pre- and post-procedure skin preparation alongside cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists.

Where You Can Work:

  • Medical Spas (MedSpas).
  • Dermatology clinics and plastic surgery centers.
  • Advanced clinical laser and skincare centers.
  • High-end wellness institutes.
